IIJmio expands its eSIM lineup across docomo and au networks
The Japanese MVNO added SMS eSIMs on two networks and an au data-only eSIM. Some existing lines still require a new contract to switch.
IIJmio added three eSIM configurations
Japanese MVNO IIJmio began offering three additional Gigaplan configurations on 1 September: an SMS-enabled eSIM on the docomo network, an SMS-enabled eSIM on the au network and a data-only eSIM on au. The company announced the change on 25 August and says customers can contract through the IIJmio website, either directly or after buying a retail package.
IIJmio's current service page now presents eSIM options across voice, data and SMS categories with docomo and au network choices. The existing docomo data-only eSIM uses a separate Type I line, while the new au data option is a Type A service.
The new lineup offers more secondary-line choices
The expansion gives customers more ways to configure a second line on a compatible phone or tablet. They can choose a data-only profile without voice service or an SMS-capable profile, then select between the two networks where the device and contract conditions allow it.
This is a domestic IIJmio mobile service in Japan, not an international travel eSIM package. The announcement broadens the available Gigaplan configurations but does not establish coverage quality, speed or compatibility for a particular device.
Some changes still require a new contract
IIJmio says an existing physical SMS SIM cannot be exchanged directly for an SMS eSIM. An existing docomo-network data-only eSIM also cannot be changed to the new au-network option; the company points customers toward a new contract in both cases.
Activation of Type D voice and SMS eSIMs on the docomo network requires the device EID. IIJmio supports only the EID prefixes listed by the company, so customers need to check the exact device against its official compatibility information before applying.
The sources do not prove universal compatibility
The official pages describe the lineup and application path, but they do not establish that every eSIM device is eligible. They also do not demonstrate identical docomo and au coverage or performance in every location, and they cannot replace a check of the selected plan, line type and EID before activation.
