Santander announces an in-app travel eSIM powered by Gigs
Santander plans to bring travel data packages into its banking app, starting with Spain. Pricing, network partners and a firm availability date remain undisclosed.
Travel connectivity enters the Santander app
Gigs announced an agreement with Santander on 3 August to embed a travel eSIM service in the bank's app. The proposed journey keeps purchase, data monitoring and renewal alongside a customer's existing banking tools instead of requiring a separate connectivity app.
Spain is identified as the first launch market. Portugal and Mexico are due to follow before a broader expansion across Santander markets, although the announcement does not attach dates to those later stages.
The packages described so far
Santander customers are expected to see 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 20 GB and 50 GB options for more than 160 countries. The release names the United States, United Kingdom, Morocco, Turkey, Japan, Brazil and Thailand as examples rather than publishing a complete destination and network table.
The service uses eSIM data on a compatible device and is designed to work without replacing a physical SIM. The source does not explain dual-line behaviour across supported handsets, so travellers still need to check the setup available on their exact model.
Why the distribution model matters
A bank can place international data in an interface that customers already use and trust. That may reduce the friction of installing another seller app and give the user one place to buy, inspect and renew an allowance during a trip.
Convenience is the confirmed product direction, not evidence of better value or performance. The release calls the commercial offer competitive but provides no public comparison, transaction test or independently observed network result.
Availability and terms remain open
The sole official source does not publish package prices, validity periods, underlying operators, activation and refund rules, a device list or a firm first-sale date in Spain.
