Do I need to turn on data roaming for a travel eSIM?

The short answer
Yes, many travel eSIMs need data roaming enabled—but only on the travel line. They often connect abroad through a local partner network, which the phone treats as roaming. The home SIM does not need roaming enabled.
To reduce accidental charges, assign the travel eSIM as the only mobile-data line, disable automatic cellular-data switching and verify that roaming is enabled for the intended profile. Menu labels vary across iPhone, Pixel, Samsung and operating-system versions, so follow the function rather than expecting one universal path.
Why the roaming switch is not the price
The device setting tells the phone whether a profile may use a network outside its home network. Commercial pricing comes from the eSIM agreement. When the purchased package covers the destination, enabling roaming on that line is normally a technical access condition rather than acceptance of an arbitrary local-network tariff.
That distinction applies only to the purchased travel line. Apple advises users to check their carrier's roaming terms because the home SIM can incur separate charges. Nomad and Airalo instruct customers to enable data roaming for their profiles while also selecting the correct line for mobile data.
A safer dual-SIM setup
Label both lines before departure. At the destination, disable mobile data and roaming on the home SIM if they are not required. Enable the travel profile, select it for data and allow roaming only on that profile. The home number may remain available for calls or messages if the plan and phone support it, but incoming activity can still be chargeable under the home carrier's rules.
On iPhone, also check cellular-data switching. On Android, open the SIM assigned to mobile internet and confirm that the roaming change was applied to that profile. Turn off Wi-Fi and load a simple page to verify the data path. A successful data session is stronger evidence than signal bars alone.
Method and limits
This guide uses Apple, Airalo and Nomad support pages checked on 27 August 2026. We compared the system setting with two travel-provider instructions, but did not audit charges from a specific home carrier or test every Android interface.
Travellers should verify both SIM plans and the destination coverage before departure. Review is due by 27 November 2026, or earlier if manufacturers change dual-SIM controls or providers alter roaming requirements.
