How to check eSIM support and carrier lock before buying

An eSIM-capable model can still be carrier-locked or regionally restricted. Verify the exact device before purchasing a travel plan.

The short answer

A model name on a compatibility list is not enough. Confirm the exact device variant, the presence of an eSIM setup menu, the absence of a carrier lock and compatibility with the selected provider. Devices sold under the same commercial name can differ by market and original carrier.

The strongest evidence comes from the device itself and the manufacturer's documentation. A plan seller may ask for the model and, when necessary, the EID or IMEI, but those identifiers should not be posted publicly. A second IMEI can be a useful clue, not a replacement for an official compatibility check.

Checking an iPhone or Pixel

Apple tells travellers to open Settings, General and About and inspect Carrier Lock. An unlocked iPhone shows “No SIM Restrictions”. Compatible models also show an EID, and the cellular settings offer an add-eSIM action. Labels vary with language and operating-system version.

Google states that support can depend on the Pixel model, market and carrier; early devices have specific regional exceptions. A compatible device exposes eSIM setup under network and SIM settings. For other Android phones, use the device manufacturer's current page. A universal third-party list ages quickly and may omit regional variants.

If the phone is carrier-locked

A lock limits the device to profiles accepted by the original carrier. Buying a travel eSIM does not remove it. Only the original carrier can unlock the phone under its policy; neither the travel-eSIM seller nor eSIM.press can do that remotely.

Check before departure, especially for financed, contract or refurbished devices. Once unlocking is confirmed, update the operating system, connect to stable Wi-Fi and install the profile. If the add-eSIM option is missing, investigate the regional variant and any corporate-device management before purchasing another QR code.

Method and limits

This guide uses Apple and Google support material checked on 27 August 2026. We deliberately avoid a universal all-device table because support changes and regional or carrier variants require separate verification.

The article cannot certify a particular phone without its exact model and status. The manufacturer, original carrier and selected eSIM provider remain the final authorities. Review is due by 27 November 2026 or earlier when new devices or regional restrictions change.
